Indulge your feet!

Especially heavily strained feet require a high degree of attention and daily care. Only when they are healthy are they able to carry us through an exhausting day. And what’s more: healthy feet are beautiful feet.

Washing, drying and proper nail clipping are important elements of healthy foot care. Foot and contrast baths with special salts in high Birkenstock soaker tubs are particularly pleasant and pampering.

After washing, feet should be dried very well, especially between the toes, as it is there that athlete’s foot fungi find an ideal breeding ground. Rubbing feet with a mild cream keeps them smooth and prevents rough, dry skin. After a bath it is especially easy to clip the – now soft – toe nails. Make sure to cut them straight and to leave no rough edges or barbs which could cut into the skin. After clipping it is best to treat nails with a nail file.

Foot and nail fungi

Foot and nail fungi occur far more often than we think. According to the latest studies more than 30% of the population suffer from this unpleasant skin disease. Areas of moist skin offer fungi the best climatic conditions to multiply. From here, the fungus spreads quickly and causes the irritating itch common to this affliction. If the disease is not treated in due course, the infection can quickly spread to the nail. Don’t hesitate to consult a physician at the first occurrence of symptoms.

Infection often takes place when walking barefoot in swimming pools, saunas and gyms. Always wear suitable bath or leisure sandals or slippers, even in the shower. Dry your feet well after washing. Healthy and dry feet are hardly vulnerable to fungal infection!

Contrast baths

Contrast baths

If your feet are particularly strained, heavy and tired we recommend regular contrast baths. Even when suffering from circulatory problems contrast baths have proven to be helpful. Your physician will gladly offer advice.

When taking a contrast bath the water level should reach the middle of the calf. This does not work with an ordinary store-bought bowl. Birkenstock has developed soaker tubs for this special purpose. They have the perfect size. You can enhance the soothing effect of the foot soak by adding special bath salts.

You need two tubs for an effective contrast bath. Fill one with warm water (26-38°C), the other with cold water (12-18°C). First you soak your feet in warm water for 3-5 minutes. Then you put them into the cold water tub for 10 seconds. Repeat this procedure two or three times and finish with cold water.

Foot exercise

To maintain the vitality and health of your feet and to improve circulation regular exercise is of essential importance. Different measures can be of assistance to you: Massage the soles of your feet!

Noppy-sandals

In former times the foot used to receive its regular massage by walking barefoot on grass, sand or pebbles. Today we hardly walk barefoot. That’s why we must manage differently, e.g. with Noppy-Sandals by Birki’s which are, of course, available in our shop. Many small knobs in two strengths massage your feet with every step – rather casually and automatically.

Of course, you can also roll your feet forcefully over a tennis ball or a water bottle – it has the same effect. By stimulating the foot reflex zones a foot massage has a positive effect on the entire nervous and circulatory system of the body.

Just a few minutes per day and your feet feel the difference. Try it out. It works!

gymnastics-sandal Madrid

A different kind of exercise for your feet is offered by the gymnastics-sandal Madrid by Birkenstock. In order to support the natural functions of the foot it needs the daily exercise of tension and relaxation of the natural step rhythm. The special construction of the gymnastics-sandal Madrid enables restorative foot movement. While the heel lifts up and leaves the footbed, the rolling motion of the foot across the ball of the foot encourages the toes to actively grip so as not to loose the sandal. This motion provides training for all foot and calf muscles.

Further gymnastic exercises can be done while sitting: Rotate your feet, try to pick things up with your feet, e.g. a small stick or a tea towel. This has the same effect as the gripping motion encouraged by the toe gripper you find in most of the footwear models available from the besser gehen shop. Some of the exercises require a bit of practice. Should you feel pain when doing them, we recommend seeing your physician to ask for other more suitable gymnastic exercises.
