Original Birkenstock-Footbeds are made of a variety of different materials such as Alpro-Foam or Alpro-Cell, PU, or EVA.
The first original Birkenstock-Footbed, however, was made of a cork-latex mixture – and even today most footbeds are made of just this material mix.
And it is cork-latex that lets you recognize the outstanding quality.
We use only the purest and highest quality cork for the models available in our besser gehen shop. Only cork of this high degree of quality fulfils all characteristics important for footbed manufacturing:
Outstanding cushioning, insulation against temperature differences and moisture, as well as adjustable flexibility.
Many exacting work steps are necessary to harvest highest quality cork. The bark of the Portuguese cork oak tree is carefully removed (peeled) so as not to damage the valuable raw material. Then it is boiled in large containers and cut into strips after that.
The cork is then made into two different products which symbolise a special attitude towards life: bottling corks for the best of wines and cork granulate for the most pleasant comfort of the original Birkenstock-Footbeds.
