The name Birkenstock has been the epitome of comfortable walking and standing at work and leisure for more than 230 years. The Birkenstock family can look back on experience in the shoe making trade starting in 1774 – the first registration of the master craftsman Johann Adam Birkenstock. And you’ll know what this tradition means as soon as you slip into an original Birkenstock-Footbed for the very first time – up until today a synonym for unique comfort and relaxed walking.
Each and every original Birkenstock-Footbed is recognizable by these characteristics: For one thing by the anatomic mould of the footbed, i.e. the footbed which mirrors a natural footprint and adjusts perfectly to your foot. For another by the toe gripper, which encourages an intensive gripping motion of the foot thus tremendously enhancing blood circuation. And last but not least by the shock absorbing cork-latex mixture which, in combination with the anatomic shape of the footbed, optimally supports the rolling motion of the foot during step formation.
Today, the patented Birkenstock-Footbed is available from the brands Alpro, Betula, Birki’s, Footprints, Papillio, and Tatami. These are Birkenstock licensees – also family owned - who responsibly carry on the longstanding tradition of comfort shoe manufacturing.
Alpro, Betula, Birki's, Footprints, Papillio, and Tatami make use of the proven Birkenstock principle of comfortable walking but as far as choice of styles and materials are concerned they have long been pursuing their own distribution strategies.
Each brand has its own specialty – take a look for yourself!
